Verdafero’s Cloud-Based Utility Analytics Software Saves Tech CU $20,000 in Utility Costs

Verdafero’s Cloud-Based Utility Analytics Software Saves Tech CU $20,000 in Utility Costs

Utility Analytics improves efficiency while supporting environmentally sound business practices.

Tech CUSan Francisco, CA (October 18, 2014) — For Silicon Valley-based Tech CU (Technology Credit Union), being a good corporate citizen means aligning sound business practices with responsible community and environmental stewardship. To help drive greater efficiency within its facilities, the credit union recently implemented Verdafero’s cloud-based Utility Analytics software, which monitors, analyzes, and tracks electric, gas, water, waste, fuel and carbon footprint expenses across all branches.

Immediate Impact

Verdafero’s Utility Analytics gave Tech CU a better understanding of its utility use throughout the organization and the credit union can now manage that use more efficiently. In addition, the software revealed an overcharge of $20,000 in utility costs that Tech CU was able to recover.

Tech CU’s Vice President of Information and Administration, Kevin Alsup leads the organization’s facility efficiency efforts. “By improving the visibility and reporting of our utilities across multiple locations, we gain a lot of insight into where we can save money,” he said. “With Verdafero’s software, we don’t have to spend several hours a month analyzing our utility bills for every branch — the information is available at the touch of a button.”

Alsup elaborated, “As an example, Verdafero’s active alerts automatically notified me of a problem at one of our branches. Our engineering staff was unable to identify the exact cause. Upon further investigation, we found that it was a problem with the meter, resulting in an overcharge of almost $1,800 per month, which we were able to recover from the utility due to the reporting features of the software.”

Verdafero Monitors, Analyzes, and Visualizes All Utility Spend

Verdafero was designed to enable businesses to reduce their environmental footprint, increase net cash flow by cutting operating expense, and increase asset value.

“As rising utility costs, lack of water during this year’s drought in California and public opinion drive the need for a more sustainable future, we see that the financial sector is not immune to the pressures of having to reduce its environmental impact while saving overhead expenses,” said Dr. Alastair Hood, CEO of Verdafero Inc. “Tech CU now has the unique ability to track, analyze and report their entire utility usage and cost comparisons in real-time. Our technology gives management the ability to analyze, compare and report on all sustainability metrics across all their facilities, including energy, water and waste.”

2014 Insider Knowledge

Verdafero Helps UK based BS Holdings’ customers save (and make) money with the Renewable Heating Initiative.

The situation

In 2011 the UK government introduced the Renewable Heating Initiative (RHI), the first of its kind in the world. The RHI is set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies among householders, communities and businesses. The UK Government expects the RHI to make a significant contribution towards their 2020 ambition of having 12 per cent of heating coming from renewable sources.

“Over the last few years as we installed more and more bio-fuel heating systems across multiple clients in the UK and Ireland it became increasingly difficult to effectively monitor and track the usage and costs of the heating systems to accurately record and receive payment for carbon reductions through the newly introduced Renewable Heating Initiative (RHI).” said Eddie Allen, General Manager of BSH.

The Verdafero Solution

“As an example of how Verdafero helps us drive our business, the RHI rebate can almost cover the cost of the heating fuel for a business. Having the ability to now capture, analysis, visualize and report the usage and costs from each bio-fuel installation across multiple client sites spread across the whole of the UK without having to visit each site individually is of vital importance to our business,” said Eddie Allen, General Manager of BSH.

“We can now do this from the comfort of our computer. Up until now utility expenses have been seen as something that are fixed and a cost of doing business. Now, with the greater insight provided by Verdafero, the user and importantly BS Holdings have the data at their fingertips and can quickly and efficiently alert the customer to any potential problems, show how each installation’s operations compare to others and importantly help the customer reduce their overhead expenses. For BS Holdings we use the system to accurately calculate the RHI metrics. Being cloud-based we can use Verdafero’s platform while on the road at the customer’s site” Eddie Allen continued.

Why is one facility’s utility bill twice as much as another similar facility?

By analyzing both cost and usage, we found the usage per square foot was the same at two different health clubs and the cost difference was due to a local arrangement. At one location electricity cost was $0.12/kwh while at the other it was $.06/kwh due to an incentive provided by the municipality. This sharpened our focus on seeking local incentives for new sites.

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort Case Study

San Francisco, CA  – Utility Optimization Software Provider Verdafero Helps Sugar Bowl Ski Resort Analyze Their Sustainability Efforts and Save Money

NORDEN, CALIFORNIA – An industry highly sensitive to climate change, ski resorts around the world are considering actions that may help prolong the long-term availability of winter snow.Lodge

In order to gain greater visibility and insight into the effect of these initiatives, the management of Sugar Bowl Resort worked with Verdafero, a software and services provider based in San Francisco, CA dedicated to helping organizations save money through optimization of utility expenses.

As a leader in sustainability Sugar Bowl Resort staff starting using MyVerdafero – Utility Optimization Software Platform in 2009 and immediately had the capability to visualize and navigate important utility metrics across the entire ski resort.

“With a ski resort of this size, real-time visibility and reporting on the cost and usage of our many utilities is incredibly important, not just to our day-to-day ski operations, but across our entire resort and organization throughout the year,” said Rebecca Meyerholz, Senior Project Manager at Sugar Bowl Resort. “As an example, with our commitment to sustainability, we started to track our energy usage and accurately compare it year-to-year and season-to-season using MyVerdafero. The last few seasons have been a challenge given the variations in weather and snowfall; the ability to analyze our actual performance based on weather variations between seasons is extremely important when making capital decisions. MyVerdafero now gives us that critical insight”.

Alastair Hood, CEO of Verdafero Inc., said, “As government legislation and public opinion drive the need for a more sustainability future and as a market leader in ski resorts, Sugar Bowl Resort now has the unique ability to track, analyze and report their utility usage and cost comparisons in real-time using MyVerdafero. This tool now gives the resort management the ability to analyze, compare and report on all sustainability metrics across the mountain, not just energy but water and waste and fuel.”

As part of their on-going upgrades Verdafero has now implemented carbon footprint reporting into MyVerdafero, thus enabling ski resorts to analyze and report their carbon footprint on a real-time basis. The implementation of the carbon foot printing methodology is a very important addition to Verdafero’s software platform. Ski resort management now has up-to-date, accurate and informative data at their fingertips to make the best financial and sustainable decisions. This is very important for the future of our industry.”

How MyVerdafero Helps Sugar Bowl Resort

Trying to analyze large amounts of electric, gas, water and waste data for a large resort like Sugar Bowl on a monthly basis can be very challenging.

Individual utilities are not consistent with their billing periods. Each utility provider works on a different billing cycle. There may be different utility providers supplying the same resource for the same facility. This all presents the end user with varying degrees of complexity when it comes to analyzing and comparing their actual usage in a meaningful and actionable way.

During our initial discussions with Sugar Bowl Resort they had some very important questions that needed answers:

  1. How are we doing this season compared to last season?
  2. How are we doing compared to the same month last season?
  3. How are we doing this month compared to the same month 3 years ago before we started our energy efficiency upgrade program?
  4. Has the difference in weather affected my usage?
  5. What about ski count over the seasons, does this affect my usage?
  6. Given our usage over the last year what is our carbon footprint?

Now, with the use of MyVerdafero, all these questions can be answered quickly and conveniently from any web connected device. Sugar Bowl Resort now has the ability to track, analyze and report their utility data and carbon footprint simply and easily.

Using the MyVerdafero system they no longer need to dedicate a spreadsheet expert to the task of manually gathering, assembling, analyzing and reporting their usage in a long-hand format. This not only saves significant costs in personal time during the season but they also now have the ability to catch billing errors, equipment failure, and scheduling irregularities quickly and efficiently.
